How Google AI Overviews Choose Which Sites to Cite

Updated 2026-09-01

Google's AI Overviews appear above the traditional list of search results and give a synthesized answer, usually with a few linked sources. Unlike a chatbot you type a question into directly, an AI Overview is generated from Google's existing search index — which means classic SEO signals and AEO signals converge here more than almost anywhere else.

It starts with normal search ranking

A page generally has to already be ranking reasonably well in traditional search for that query to have any chance of being pulled into an AI Overview. This is the single biggest practical implication: if your page isn't indexed and ranking at all, AI Overview visibility isn't a separate problem to solve — you need the SEO fundamentals in place first.

What separates a cited page from a merely-ranking one

What this means for a local or service business

If your customers search things like "how much does [service] cost" or "best [category] near me," having a page that plainly and specifically answers that exact phrasing — with real numbers, real service areas, real specifics — gives you a genuine shot at being one of the cited sources, on top of the ordinary SEO benefit of that page.

Testing it

AI Overviews don't appear for every query and vary by region and over time, which makes them harder to test reliably than a chatbot you can query directly. Chatbot-style answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) are a more consistent way to check your current visibility — which is what AEO Score is built to do.
