Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up in ChatGPT Answers
Updated 2026-09-01
If you've typed a question into ChatGPT that your business should obviously answer, and it named someone else — or nobody — it's rarely random. A handful of specific, checkable reasons account for most cases.
1. You don't have a page that answers the specific question
A homepage that says "we do great work" doesn't give a model anything concrete to cite for "who offers [specific service] in [city]." If the exact question your customer asks doesn't map to a specific page or section on your site, there's nothing precise to surface.
2. Your content is thin or generic
Broad, interchangeable marketing language reads the same as every competitor's. Specifics — named services, service areas, pricing ranges, credentials, years in business — give a model something distinctive to work with.
3. You have few or no visible reviews
Reviews are one of the clearest independent signals that a business is real, active, and trusted by actual customers. A business with no reviews on Google or industry-specific platforms is harder for a model to recommend with confidence.
4. Your business details are inconsistent
A different address, phone number, or business name across your website, Google Business Profile, and directory listings creates ambiguity. Models — like careful humans — hesitate to confidently name something they can't fully verify.
5. There's no independent third party discussing you
If the only place your business is described is your own website, that's a weaker signal than being mentioned in a local publication, a "best of" roundup, or an industry directory. AI systems tend to weight independent corroboration heavily.
6. Live search wasn't used, or found nothing recent
Sometimes the honest answer is that the model answered from older training knowledge rather than a live search, and your business simply wasn't prominent enough online at that point in time to have been learned. This is one more reason a fresh, current web presence matters.
How to find out which one is actually true for you
Guessing wastes effort. AEO Score runs your real customer questions through live web search and reports the specific, evidence-backed reason for each result — not a generic checklist, but what was actually found (or not found) when it looked.
